In a very short space of time, we’ve come a long way with Social Media. Social Media is a now a part of our lives and has become necessary and easy to run your business successfully.

Every famous Company of World is now largely focusing on its Social Network, than TV or Print Advertisement. So that’s why it’s necessary to move with trend and get customers/audience.

Why Social Media?

  1. Facebook have more than a 1 billion active user and Twitter has more than 750 million users.
  2. Social Media is like Word to Mouth Marketing – the best one.
  3. Get better position in SERP’s and your blog gets better crawling by Search Engine bots.

Social Media Mistakes

7 Mistakes You Make in Social Media

#1 Not being Authentic and Transparent

One should never show himself something he’s not. To get a trust from your audience you should not be afraid to add your personal voice to it. Transparency is what Public demand and should not be ignored.

Be transparent about yourself and your skills. Public loves you only till you’re true to them. The good thing about being the single moderator, you don’t have to approve content with your partners to post updates.

#2 No Aims and Objectives

Lots of times you might have heard “Fail to Plan and Plan to fail”. Well its truth, if you don’t spend a bit of time on planning your Online Marketing, its going to be fail and maybe fatal also.

Before you start your Social Media campaign, initially its must to have Aims and targets for it. Set an achievable target, target the audience you want and where will you find them. These three are the most important objectives for any type of Social Media campaigns.

#3 Doing Hard Selling

This is where mostly people lose their trust and loyalty from the target audience because they spam their Facebook Page/Twitter account with just links and nothing valuable for the people.

Start giving useful content to them like updating some facts related to your market, funny images, asking questions and sharing videos with them, this will definitely going to boost your Online presence and whenever you will share links, they’re surely going to take it seriously.

#4 Treating it as a One-Way Broadcast Medium

Never ever mess with someone, who wants to have a conversation with you. You can fully automate your Pages by sending your blog feed regularly and can forget that you ever had a Social Media accounts for promotion, but surely it has a negative effect.

Social Media seems interesting only when it’s a two-way conversation between you and the community. Remember, Reply to every comments, Messages and other queries from your community.

#5 About section empty or seems ugly

About section is made to show a small description. Everyone before hitting like or follow button will see your bio, definitely if it seems interesting then only he will initiate .

Write an awesome description of your page. A

good example of description is “Founder of @ProBlogger & @DigitalPS, Author, speaker and eBook publisher. Husband & Dad to 3 boys. Love lattes & Leicas. Personal Tweets at @DarrenRowse”, this is the bio of Darren Rowse.

In his short bio, he mentioned his Working Fields correctly and also a bit about his personal life. A bad description can be “I Love cheese!” This small description will be the first impression of how much active you’re on Social Media.

#6 No Patience

Using Social Media is a long-term approach. For a new blog, it takes about 4-6 months to establish a following for his blog. You have to wait to create good followers of your blog and spend quality time in it.

Once it has been established it will continue to build traffic to your blog and people will come looking for you.

#7 Being Traditional, not using advanced tools

You’re out of town so you couldn’t post updates and then tell your visitors “I’m sorry, I went for a small vacation, I will update my account from now”. No you’re doing it wrong way, eventually people never like these type of lame excuses and people may lose interest in you.

You should know how to schedule updates, when you’re out to vacation. Use tools such as BufferApp or HootSuite to manage your Work. If you want, take some pain and try to update and be in touch using a Smartphone for them, there’s no better solution for it.

So the list I’ve compiled is over, but I know the list will be endless if I start to list every problem we make. Let us know what mistakes you’ve made by commenting below and how you coped with it.

Share it with your friends, so that they also don’t make mistakes in the beginning :)

  1. A great work, i will agree with all your points and i will keep in mind for always. Thanks for sharing such valuable words with us.

  2. Hi there! This is an amazing post. These days with blogs popping out here and there, everyone seems to think that it’s a race. And I’ve met a few bloggers, who are so desperate to promote their blogs or social networks that it doesn’t look good anymore. I had to unfollow a few pages because my feed was just bombarded with promotion and that’s about it. Others, of which worth mentioning, bring their emotional issues and ok, sometimes it’s ok to ‘socialize’ that way but when it’s every 15 minutes of posting, then I’m out. I have accounts on most social networks but have my focus on Facebook with Twitter integration when I post for now – although I have been getting a following on others, too. Building a good credibility in blogging is a must, with that, everything else will start falling into its right place. Thumbs up for this post. (sorry for rambling :-p)

  3. Yes, its true that when we are working on blog, our online presence must be well and good. Our reputation on FB pages and twitter must be good. As we will share our blog post, we will get lot of traffic from our blog.

  4. Worth reading article, do doubt social media now become the part of our daily life and its far more easy than ever before to run your business more easily by promoting it on social media. Thanks for sharing such a nice and great knowledge with all of us. keep sharing

  5. Good tips. Few people realise it takes time to build up a social media presence and then more time to maintain it. But, it does help build your reputation and help you create a brand and that can have long term benefits.

Having some kind of strategy or plan should help you develop a social media presence more quickly too. If you don’t, you risk wasting an awful lot of time and may well get nowhere.

  6. Patience is a huge one. Clients expect to get 3,000 Facebook fans right away. I say great, buy them, you don’t need me. They look confused then I explain how social media works and what to expect and then they understand a bit more, but it’s never easy in the beginning.

    1. Obviously its never easy, especially in beginning. Having paid followers isn’t going to help a bit, there will be only have a huge of likes but they aren’t real followers who just love any content you share with them.

  7. n a very short space of time, we’ve come a long way with Social Media. Social Media is a now a part of our lives and has become necessary and easy to run your business successfully.
    Thnanks

  8. Just wanted to know what are the disadvantages on posting in FB groups.. Heard that its not advisable to post in facebook groups. Please let me know.

    1. I never saw any disadvantage in sharing your content in Facebook groups, it actually helps you bring good traffic to your blog.

  9. You can programme updates with facebook fan pages…I do very often, especially if i go away for a few days or I am not sure if I will get proper time to get online…

  10. Great Article Anmol. I read entire post. and like this. but i like very much a point in this post is that “Start giving useful content to them like updating some facts related to your market, funny images, asking questions and sharing videos with them” Thanks for sharing Anmol your experience

    1. Glad you liked it, now start practicing this with your audience and see the change in your engagement with users.

  11. That is very nice tips. Actually, I really your first three point. The most internet marketer fail because they have no transparency. They connect to the other people because the want to sell their affiliate product and not going for the relationship. The high blood pressure business make them fall down. Moreover, as you mention “No plan, mean plan to fail”

    1. Hello Kimsea, obviously you should add a personal touch else how people are going to believe on products you’re selling. ;)

    Hi Anmol,

Thanks for sharing about this 7 mistakes, if i’m updating my facebook fan page, not only links will show i’m adding some content text about the post.

  13. Hi Anmol
Thanks for sharing this useful information. I have seen many with no use of any latest tools and they no have any final objective. This information will help our blog in growing properly.
    Thanks again..!!

  14. Interesting. #7 is my latest mistake. I’m rarely on schedule to update my fanpage. I guess I should consider some frequency to it.

  15. Hi Anmol,
Completely Agree. Patience is the key as social media becomes a bit boring when you just thinking about increasing traffic rather than building relationship.
Thanks for Article. Keep Sharing Content. Cheers

  16. glad to hear this! This are some of the best mistakes everyone is making.Social media is growing day by day if you are doing such mistakes then there won’t be any retakes. Thanks for sharing some awesome ideas.

  17. Anmol Nice one! Patience is the key or success as you described. and LoL pictures tells the whole story. very good budy! keep it up.

  18. Great Post Anmol,
You are right social media is like word to mouth marketing. To get better results from Social Media, one should take Social Media as a place to interact with like minded people instead of promoting site or blog. Be authentic to make the most out of social media.
    Thanks for sharing :)

  19. Anmol, as your name itself suggests being very precious ( in Hindi) your article too justifies he same. Nice tips, but it is very difficult to get social network follow ups. Even though we manage to get follow ups making them loyal readers is all the more difficult .Could you suggest some of your tricks to get easy follow ups. Thanks

  20. A huge mistake I see a lot of people make is to open up all these accounts and then try to build each one up. What you are doing is diluting your audience – you are doing neither well.

Focus on one, do it really well, build a huge following. And then you will be able to more easily be able to transfer your audience to another platform.

    1. Yeah Carlie, this should be the our ultimate goal. Build a good following on a one Network, then only focus on any other network. ;)

  21. Thanks Amal for liking and commenting here :)
I have seen many bloggers and Internet marketers showing fake Income screenshots to public, but they can cheat only once to people, no one gives second chance :’)

  22. #3 is spot on. Hard selling doesn’t really work on social media. What you should do instead is lead people back to your blog, or website, and give them useful content. Then let them decide if they want to sign-up to your newsletter from there.

I like to think of it as leaving breadcrumbs. It might not be the best analogy, but it works ;)

    1. Yes Henri you’re right, First we should build trust and then only we can lead them to our website. People have a zero tolerance,if they see you spamming they will just unsubscribe you.

  23. Hey Anmol,
Great post it was. Yeps! One dumb move can kill your Career.
One big wrong move people do before reaching success is “Showing Off’. Well, it can really put you down.

    Thanks for sharing. Cheers! ;)

  24. A very comprehensive post on social media after quite a long time I found; but you missed to mention a few points which I am giving below:
Depending upon nature of your blog or website you need to select 1 to 3 social media to promote it. You must not exceed more than 3 social media else everything will be messy
Never stick to your blog subject only, present yourself as normal human being and share with them funny videos, quotable quotes, about your personal life to let your fans treat you like human being and not the marketing machine
Third and most important is that never over-rely on social media. For example just after grabbing thousands and thousands of fans never expect they all will click on your new post you shared with them regardless of the quality of your post

    1. 3 tips you gave are awesome and worth it, but as I said above we can’t just list every mistake we make in only one article.;)

  25. Yes i am agreed with you everyone shout start learn from their mistakes and Buffer is one of the best tool to use in social media activities because it would be maintain many things under one roof.

    1. Yes Hyptia, Buffer is the best one to maintain your Social Media presence. Its free, feature rich and easy to use. :)
