So they are doing an excellent job of utilising the social media to leverage ranking, sales, and consumer awareness, right?

Wrong!

They have done what 80% of all bloggers and companies do.  They have added some icons to a webpage and spent a couple hours one afternoon setting up the social media accounts, and are waiting for it to ‘catch fire’ and work magic for them. Only problem is that it never does.

The Plain Truth…

The plain truth is if it were that easy to do, and as easy as most of the blog posts seem to indicate it should be it would be of no use at all.

If it worked like that then it would have equal value to every website thereby cancelling the positive marketing affects you are striving for.  In my personal opinion the only thing worse than not using the social media at all is placing the icons on your blog or website then not using them correctly.

Social Media is a group of interactive communities.

To put in in perspective let’s consider basic human nature because when dealing with the social media you are working on a people to people level more than a business to people level. Look at the following examples and see how they correspond in social media courtesies.

A few seconds later neither have any memory of passing each other and neither good nor bad impression of the other as a person.

  • This is the equivalent of having no social media presence on your blog. Aside from an unknown mutual interest or need that brought you by happenstance to the same general place at the same time you have no personal bond or affinity.

You glance at each other, make eye contact and exchange a pleasantry of “Good Afternoon”.

You both feel like the other person ‘seemed nice’ and that it must be a friendly area. You will not remember it clearly but when you think back it will seem like it was a nice afternoon.

  • This is unfortunately where most social media interactions fall on the web. It may not be quite as cognizant as that but it is the same effect. They visited your site, shared or joined your Facebook page because they were happy with that they saw but when they ‘followed you’ or said hello on your page they received no acknowledgement. The only impression in their mind is they were polite to you and you did not return the same courtesy.

The entire premise of social media is to get people talking about you, your blog, or your product. It is virtually impossible to get people talking about these things (in a positive light) if you are not talking to them.

If they follow you on twitter but you never ‘tweet’ then there is no conversation or interaction for them to talk about. If they post a question or comment on your Facebook page or timeline and you do not respond they will stop talking and decide if you are not interested then neither are they.

If you have all the social media sites set up and they are all silent all the time leaving you to wonder why you bothered or what the big deal is consider if you are actually using social media or if it is simply there as a decoration on your website.

  1. Respond to EVERY comment on Facebook. Even if it is just a ‘like’ or to say thank you or exchange a pleasantry do not be the person that walked by and looked the other way.
  2. In general it is better to leave a negative comment and respond appropriately than to delete it. It shows character and builds confidence of others reading.
  3. If you see a share of your post, product, or reference to your blog or product comment if you are able or send a one line thank you message to the person that shared it. This will encourage them to continue sharing and show others how interested in their opinions you are.
  4. Consider strongly when somebody pins something of yours on Pinterest or follows you on any of the media sites to do the same in return. Once again it encourages them to continue and makes them remember you look for you as opposed to overlooking your future shares and tweets.
  5. Set a schedule on a near daily basis to go through the social media profiles of your blog or blogs and respond to all as needed and if there is nothing to respond to then have something to add or say yourself. Do not be a salesperson all the time – simple comments on other things are perfectly acceptable but do not go silent for days and weeks on end.
  6. Remember that you can learn a lot from other people in similar fields as you. It is a big world; we are not all competing for the same market. Following, posting comments, and sharing with and from others in the same field is an opportunity to learn other best practice, receive peer recognition, make friends, and gain inspiration and insight for future projects and developments. If you see good posts do not be shy to share them even if similar to something you would place on your own blog.

Two Simple Formulas to Estimate Long Tail Traffic & CTRs

math formulasQuadratic Formulas. Polynomials. Algebraic equations. When I hear terms like these I’m quickly transported back to Algebra class, 10th grade with Mr. Johnson.
 
Like a lot of kids, maths was my most despised subject. It was difficult and I didn’t understand how the complex formulas would ever be applied in real life. In short, advanced maths seemed like a total waste of time. :D
 
However, now that I am older and hopefully a little bit wiser too, I find myself routinely using math to help me complete tasks like projecting long tail search traffic and determining my click-through rates (CTR) in SERPs.

Today, I apply formulas like these daily to accomplish my work. Mr. Johnson, it may have taken me awhile to come around, but you were right. Matsh is in fact, not a waste of time.

Two Simple Formulas

But just because I’ve “seen the light” and understand the value of math / statistics doesn’t mean that I’m very good at it. Fortunately, the principles I use for internet marketing are pretty simple. No advanced degree in mathematics from a fancy school required to do this stuff. As Mr. Johnson used to say, an open mind and a desire to learn is all you need to understand this stuff. I believe this to be true of the two formulas explained below.

Long-tail Traffic Formula

Phrase Match Search Volume – Exact Match Search Volume = Long Tail Traffic Potential

Let’s begin with a super simple formula that will help you estimate how much long-tail traffic you could get around your primary keyword. To find this out you’ll need to open up the Keyword Tool in Google Adwords.

After you’ve logged into the keyword tool, enter one of your desired keywords using exact match and phrase match options and click the “search” button within the tool. Then simply subtract the phrase match traffic from exact match traffic to get an estimate of how much long tail traffic exists for a keyword.

Here’s an example that will help explain. One of the phrases that I want to rank for on my website is “home business.” After plugging this term into the keyword tool I find that home business gets 246,000 phrase match searches and 14,800 exact match searches each month. After doing some basic subtraction, I discover the long tail search opportunity for this term is roughly 231,200 searches per month. That is a robust long tail and gives me good reason to start building content by blogging around the topic of home business.

SERP Click-Through Rate Formula

Number of Visits for Keyword / Number of Exact Searches for Keyword = SERP CTR

To find out the number of visits for a keyword, you’ll need to open up your analytics program. If you use Google Analytics, look at your Organic keyword referrals over the last 30 days. For this example, we’ll pretend you wanted to target the phrase cute boots for women and received 20 visits from this term over the past 30 days.

For the second part of this formula, go to the keyword tool again and search cute boots for women using exact match. According to the Google Adwords Keyword tool there are 720 exact match searches on average for this term every month.

Now that we know how many visits we received over the last 30 days for this phrase using Google Analytics and understand what the total opportunity from the keyword tool each month, we only need to divide to find out what our CTR is for that keyword in the search results as shown below:

20 visits / 720 exact match monthly searches = 2.78% CTR

When it comes to internet marketing, you can apply a lot of easy formulas to discover pretty interesting and profitable information about a website. Best of all, you don’t need to be a math whiz to use them either.

Before getting started make a list of authority blogs in your niche. It won’t take much of your time since you must be already aware of the beast in your industry.

In any way I am not saying, you can’t do that or you can’t write like any problogger but I strongly believe that you should own credibility first before you start guest posting. You have to write and practice more at your blog and only then you will be able to write for the bigger than yours blog.

So make a list of blogs for each month where you will guest post, I don’t like to write much so I don’t. On my own blog I have no proper time for posting but I make sure I write atleast 4 guest posts every month so that people will come to my blog and above all they will know me as a blogger and trust me, when I speak to them.

One more thing I would like to add is don’t make a list of 20 blogs in a time. Keep it short to 5 blogs minimum in a month and don’t over do or else you will lose interest soon. If you have selected 5 you can do much more with that than with the 20 more mediocre blogs you have added on your list.

2. Get Time

You need to get time for doing this. Since guest blogging is for traffic only and it is not paid, bloggers are not willing to do it and rather prefer writing for their own blogs. Forgetting that they can make more money if they just get a bigger audience for their blog, so why not be selfish?

If you don’t have a writing schedule just like me even then it is not a very hard job and if you have a schedule than it is a piece of cake.

First of all, free yourself from any sort of clutter. Get yourself time by avoiding Facebook and Twitter and think how much time you spend online. I spend max 5-6 hours now so if I just pause some of my other work which is on less priority for a hour what I will lose? Possibly nothing, I think by doing that I save my time and do more things in less time.

If you are really interested to check Facebook and Twitter than stop yourself from doing that. It is nothing more than a game of determination. Blogging is more about passion so you need to be driven for that and if passion lacks there are chances that you will fail so always stay motivated for a better day at your blog.

3. Sort Out the Content:

Once you have got yourself free and you have the list of the blogs, things start getting easy. Now visit those blogs and analyze the topics they cover. Have an insight on what they have covered recently and among their topics what they have been missing or any topic that they used to write on and it is a part of their category but they are not writing over that.

You can go with any of the above mentions either you can write in continuation of the blogs like write another detailed article on the recent topic that they covered or you can write on the topic they have missed.

In both cases, chances are more that your guest post will be accepted.

Since it shows that the content is not general and it is mainly written for the approached blog.
