When you have a popular blog with good traffic, you can earn money from it — in some cases, a lot of money, from ads, affiliate links, sponsorships, product sales, and more. The problem, though, is that monetizing your blog when it’s hosted by the free service isn’t quite so simple.

Free blogs are perfect for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time designing a site and tinkering with the look of the page. However, as you become more serious about blogging, chances are you will develop some ideas about how you want your blog to look, and want to develop a custom website design that more accurately reflects your brand.
When you self-host, you can design your site to appear exactly the way you want it. For example, should you develop a WordPress.org site, you will have access to a far wider range of themes that you can customize to your unique brand style.

4. You Want Access Tools to Improve Your Site
Much like a self-hosted blog allows greater freedom with design, it also offers the option of using additional tools and plug-ins that help you grow and improve your blog.
For example, you’ll have the option of adding a plugin to automatically run backups, something that you’ll appreciate should your blog ever be hacked or crash. Currently, most free blogging platforms like WordPress.com and Blogger don’t allow the use of such tools, so if you want to add them, you need to self-host.

Hidden among the legalese and small print, you’ll often find clauses that allow the provider to shut down your blog at any time and for any reason. Imagine losing all of your hard work because of some perceived violation of the TOS. When you self-host, you maintain the control over your content and your site.
Taking your blog from a free platform to a self-hosted server is a major decision. You should only do so when you are ready to invest some money —remember, a successful blog is not free— and time into making the site as good as it can be. It’s more difficult to take a break when you’ve built a large audience, but if you’re ready to go to the next level, it begins with self-hosting.

You raised some excellent reasons why a person should start a self hosted blog. This seems to be one of the biggest questions asked in many of the blogging groups. People seem very fearful of going with a web host for some reason – they think it’s too complicated. But in fact I always found it easier to have a blog that I own and can what I want without restriction.
Another curious thing…I’ve never seen a free WP or Blogger site appear in any first or second page Google results.

I think a self hosted blog implies that the blogger is a professional and that kind of reflects in the eyes of your readers as qwlly. Besides you don’t want to be at the mercy of a 3rd party as you rightly mentioned. Also you can build your email list on self hosted blog which is a must for driving visitors repeated to to your blog. That way they keep coming back for new content and you can build a relationship with them which is very helpful to turn your blog profitable.

I go for self-hosting right away, I find it can be difficult to build authority with a new domain name. Once I started getting self-hosting and domains, I never looked back, for all of these very reasons.
Unfortunately, I still lacks couple of stuffs for starting out with self hosting. I am confident though, that I will be rolling the track soon enough. Anyways, thanks for this great piece of content Ammar.
Yeah, completely agree with you. Starting blogs on other platforms will do no good for anybody us a blogger, one we realize this issue then we start thinking about migrating it to another hosting provider. Advantages you discussed in the article is correct, we’re restricted to use given themes in free other platforms but a self financing server hosting will allow us to do all that things in our website. Thanks Aammar for sharing nice tips regarding hosting of a blog. its always critical to choose a good hosting when a blogger starts a blog. but most of the bloggers don’t consider his/her hosting in start. but when they get good traffic on the blog they have to face different limitions by the shared hosting etc. then they have to upgrade their hosting or they have to move their blog to a VPS or dedicated server. so, then better is when someone is going to start a blog he/she shoulld also keep things in mind about the blog hosting so that he/she should face the issue in future.
